Quantitative analysis of digital topography refers to diff erent
methods and algorithms for the extraction of topographic
information from digital elevation models (DEMs), which are
primarily used to investigate relationships between topographic
forms and denudational and tectonic processes, and to infer the
spatial and temporal variability of diff erent drivers of
landscape evolution. The theory behind these methods is based on
the fi rst-order control exerted by topographic forms on the effi
ciency of denudational processes whereby, in general, the rate of
fl uvial incision is the fundamental control on the temp and style
of landscape evolution in erosive settings. In this situation, for
more than a century, the quantitative analysis of longitudinal
profi les has been the gold standard method for inferring the
spatial variability of channel incision rates and the spatial and
temporal dynamics of potential controls (tectonic, lithologic and
climatic) of river morphology. This is a review article in which
we discuss the theory behind the diff erent methods used for
extracting channel steepness, their limitations, and modern tools
that have been widely used internationally. Initially, we present
a general approach to the geomorphic role of channel steepness.
Then, we discuss in depth the stream length-gradient index method
(also known as the SL index) and its variations, which were widely
used by the geomorphological community. Following, we present a
theoretical discussion of the stream-power model, including
channel concavity and steepness indices, as well as the normalized
channel steepness index (ksn ). We also discuss the theoretical
foundation and derivation of ksn from the chi method, an
integration that transforms the horizontal coordinate into a
variable with dimensions of length \χ (chi), allowing us to
estimate k sn more precisely. The chi method revolutionized the
quantitative analysis of digital topography, culminating in the
development of a series of new tools capable of performing complex
topographic analysis. Finally, we compare the distribution of the
diff erent channel steepness indices for the same erosive
landscape, the Quadril{\'a}tero Ferr{\'{\i}}fero (Brazil). Our
results, which are consistent with the literature as well as the
theory, suggest that the most robust channel steepness index for
the Quadril{\'a}tero Ferr{\'{\i}}fero is the ksn extracted
using the chi method. Our ambition is that our review article will
disseminate modern concepts and tools with potential for
quantitative analysis of the digital topography but which still
have scarce applications in the Brazilian literature.",
